浄土真宗本願寺派 重恩寺
梅雨の曇り空の下、今年も蓮が咲きました。
友人に写真を見せたら「お寺っぽいねぇ」と言われました。
そこで、今回は、蓮のお話。
蓮は古く中国から渡来したものです。花後、実が肥大して「蜂の巣」に似た形のなるので、古来日本では別名「ハチス」と言われます。
仏教の花である蓮華や睡蓮は、泥の中に生まれながら、清らかで美しい花を咲かせることから大切にされます。
浄土教では、極楽浄土に往生したものは、蓮の花の上に生まれると説かれ、極楽浄土や往生の象徴的な表現となります。
では、浄土真宗ではどうでしょうか。
一蓮托生という言葉があります。時に政治の世界などでも使われ、善い行い悪い行いを問わず、運命共同体という意味で用いられています。
けれど、仏教では単に生死を共にするという以上に深みのある言葉です。
阿弥陀さまは、修行中の菩薩さまであった時に、四十八願と呼ばれる誓いを立てられました。それが完全に実現しないければ、ほとけ様にならないと決意され、やがて、誓いが満たされ、ほとけ様となられました。
四十八願の中心になっていたのが、念仏往生を誓う第十八願。
一心に阿弥陀仏の名を唱えたものは、必ず極楽浄土に往生するというもので、つまり南無阿弥陀仏と唱えれば、だれでも等しく往生するということです。これが極楽浄土で同じ蓮の花の上に生まれるという一蓮托生の本意ではないでしょうか。
